Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre
Nature Centre Volunteer Interpreter
Adults or teens interested in nature and talking to people.
Ongoing Opportunity (> 1 year)
Description of PositionWe are looking for volunteers to welcome visitors to the Estuary Nature Centre, located on the beautiful shores of the estuary at Hecate Park in Cowichan Bay.
To be a Volunteer Nature Interpreter, you don't need to be an 'expert' - but you do need to share a love and fascination with our beautiful watershed! You also need to be comfortable engaging with visitors to help them explore current interactive exhibits. We have a small gift shop for sales, so volunteers will handle cash and take Interac payments, as well as take in membership applications.
We have a craft & activity table for children, microscope station, spotting scope, touch tank and aquariums, as well as other interactive exhibits that offer plenty of opportunities for interaction with and education of visitors of all ages. There is a wildlife viewing tower with a panoramic view of the estuary and an interpretive trail along the shore. Volunteer shifts are usually two hours and can include opening and closing the Centre, helping with programs for school children, or adult educational programs and special events.
Orientation and mentoring are available - our team of Nature Interpreters meet monthly to share our skills with one another. We look forward to hearing from you!
