handyDART

handyDART is an alternative transportation service for persons who have a disability that is sufficiently severe that the person is unable to use conventional transit service without assistance.  It is an assisted shared-ride system.  The bus driver will help you on and off the bus and other passengers will be picked up and dropped off en route to your destination.

You must register with handyDART before you may use the service.  There is no fee to register.

All passengers must wear seat belts.

How to Register

Call the handyDART office at 250-748-1230 and provide your name, mailing address, and telephone number.  We will register you into the system so that you will be able to book your trips.

Book Your Trip

Call the handyDART office to book a trip and have the following information ready:

● name of passenger(s)

● date and time of travel

addresses of pick-up and drop-off locations

● additional passengers (attendant or companion)

● if you use a wheelchair or another type of mobility aid, and

● if you wish to book a return trip

There are two types of trips that may be booked up to two weeks in advance:

1. regular subscription trips that you take at least once a week, or

2. one-time trips to an appointment, to go shopping, for a social visit or recreational activity

Children Using handyDART

Children under six years of age who are using handyDART must be accompanied by an adult.  The accompanying adult must sit beside the child.  Children under 18 kg (40 lbs) must be secured in a CSA-approved car seat supplied by the accompanying adult.

Pick-up Time Frame

When booking your trip, you will be assigned a pick-up time.  A pick-up time frame is fifteen minutes before and after your assigned pick-up time, meaning your ride could arrive anytime during that period.

Passengers with Cognitive Disabilities

Passengers with a cognitive disability must be met by a responsible adult at the trip destination unless handyDART has a letter of release on file. If the passenger is not met at the destination, the passenger will be transported to the emergency address provided on the registration application, or to a respite home designated by the Ministry of Human Resources. The passenger’s caregiver will be responsible for a $10 transportation charge, and for costs incurred if the driver leaves the passenger at a respite facility.

Carry-On Baggage

Due to space limitations, only items you can carry as you board are permitted. Call handyDART for further information.

Seatbelts

Seatbelts must be worn by all passengers unless an exemption from the Motor Vehicle Office is shown. The transit office should be notified that a seatbelt exemption will be used when the ride is booked.

When the Bus Arrives

It is not necessary to wait outside, but if you are being picked up at an apartment complex or commercial building, we ask that you wait in the lobby.

Bad Weather

Bad weather may interfere with the handyDART and the conventional bus schedules. Please keep this in mind when the weather causes less-than-ideal driving conditions.
